Don’t let 1099s sneak up on you

Morning Reader!

It’s not even tax season yet… so why are we talking about 1099s?

Because prepping now will save you stress (and scrambling) in January.

If you paid any contractors, consultants, or other businesses this year, now’s the time to check:

Do you need to file a 1099 for them?

  • We created a simple 1099 Decision Tree to help you find out. Go to file > create a copy to create a working document for your practice.

What information do I need to file a 1099?

How do I file a 1099?

  • Bookkeeping software (like QuickBooks).
  • E-filing service (like tax1099).
  • Work with your accountant.

What’s the deadline?

  • Individuals/businesses must receive their copy of the 1099 by January 31, 2026.

Taking 10 minutes now to request W-9s (there is typically a delay here!) and check your contractor list will make tax season smoother.

A good best practice going forward: always request a W-9 from anyone you pay — before you pay them.

2) Social Media Tips For Business Owners Who Hate Self-Promotion

Who else can relate to this? These approaches can help :)

3) Recent Tax Law Updates That Could Boost Your Refund

New tax legislation could mean bigger refunds through expanded deductions and credits. The One Big Beautiful Bill permanently extends key tax cuts, raises the SALT deduction cap, and reforms tip and overtime taxation — changes that directly benefit small business owners.
